The initial octagonal structure of the Dome of the Rock and its round wooden dome had basically the same shape as is does today. It was built by the order of the Umayyad caliph Abd al-Malik ( r . 685-705). According to Sibt ibn al-Jawzi (1185-1256), construction started in 685/86, while al-Suyuti (1445-1505) holds that its commencement year was 688. [17] A dedicatory inscription in Kufic script is preserved inside the dome. The date is recorded as AH 72 (691/2 CE), the year most historians believe the construction of the original Dome was completed. In this inscription, the name of "al-Malik" was deleted and replaced by the name of the Abbasid caliph al-Ma'mun ( r . 813-833). This alteration of the original inscription was first noted by Melchior de Vogüé in 1864. Construction cost was reportedly seven times the yearly tax income of Egypt. An alternative interpretation of the inscription claims that it indicates the year when construction started.

It was narrated that Muhammad bin Jahsh said:
"We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah when he raised his head toward the sky, and put his palm on his forehead, then he said: 'Subhan Allah, what a stern warning has been revealed! We fell silent and were scared. The following day I asked him: 'O Messenger of Allah, what is this stern warning that has been revealed? He said: 'By the One in Whose hand is my soul, if a man were to be killed in the cause of Allah then brought back to life, then killed, but he owed a debt, he would not enter paradise until his debt was paid off,"

At this rare mosque in Tbilisi, Sunni and Shia Muslims pray side by side.
The Georgian capital of Tbilisi has long been a crossroads for many different faiths, and a unique example of this religious openness can be seen at the Jumah Mosque. Located amid the sulfur baths of the city's ancient Abanotubani district, down the road from a church and synagogue, this simple red brick mosque is known for being a place of worship for both Sunni and Shia Muslims.
The Tbilisi Mosque, as it is also called, has had many incarnations throughout its history. First built in the 1700s by the Ottoman Empire, it has been destroyed and rebuilt three times over the past 300 years. Its most recent transformation, however, has been in the composition of its worshipers.
After the bloody Russian Revolution in 1917, the newly formed government of the Soviet Republic set out to radically reform the former Russian Empire. One of the main goals of the new Communist state was to strip religious institutions of their power. The main target of these crackdowns was the Russian Orthodox Church, which had enjoyed special privileges under the Tsar, and the Church's land and property were aggressively confiscated. Muslim communities were initially given more leeway, but no religion was safe from the new government's push to become the center of its citizens' lives.
About 10 percent of Georgia's population is Muslim, and until 1951 there were two mosques in Tbilisi. Like everywhere else in the world, Sunni and Shia Muslims in Tbilisi worshipped separately, at the Jumah Mosque and the Blue Mosque, respectively. But in 1951 the Blue Mosque was demolished by the Communist government to make way for a bridge. Recognizing that the Shia community had nowhere to go, the Jumah Mosque opened its doors to them, making it one of the only mosques in the world where the two sects worship together. Until 1996, a black curtain was used to divide the mosque between Sunnis and Shiites during worship, but today, the two sects worship side by side.

The mosque is located next to the Orbeliani bathhouse, whose beautiful tile mosaic facade makes it an attraction in its own right.
In July 2011, Parliament of Georgia passed new law allowing religious minority groups with "historic ties to Georgia" to register. The draft of the law specifically mentions Islam and four other religious communities. [3]
Mosques in Georgia operate under the supervision of the Georgian Muslim Department, established in May 2011. Until then the affairs of Georgia's Muslims had been governed from abroad by the Baku- based Caucasus Muslims Department. [4]
In 2010, Turkey and Georgia signed an agreement by which Turkey will provide funding and expertise to rehabilitate three mosques and to rebuild a fourth one in Georgia. While Georgia will rehabilitate four Georgian monasteries in Turkey . [5] The Georgia-Turkey agreement will allow the reconstruction of the historical Azize mosque in Batumi , Ajaria demolished in the middle of the last century. Turkey will rehabilitate the mosques at Samtskhe-Javakheti and Akhaltsikhe regions, Kobuleti District , build the Azize mosque burned down in 1940 and restore the Turkish bathhouse in Batumi.
158 ولئن انقضت آجالكم في هذه الحياة الدنيا, فمتم على فرشكم, أو قتلتم في ساحة القتال, لإلى الله وحده تحشرون, فيجازيكم بأعمالكم.
159 فبما رحمة من الله لنت لهم ولو كنت فظا غليظ القلب لانفضوا من حولك فاعف عنهم واستغفر لهم وشاورهم في الأمر فإذا عزمت فتوكل على الله إن الله يحب المتوكلين
159 فبرحمة من الله لك ولأصحابك -أيها النبي- من الله عليك فكنت رفيقا بهم, ولو كنت سيئ الخلق قاسي القلب, لانصرف أصحابك من حولك, فلا تؤاخذهم بما كان منهم في غزوة "أحد", واسأل الله -أيها النبي- أن يغفر لهم, وشاورهم في الأمور التي تحتاج إلى مشورة, فإذا عزمت على أمر من الأمور -بعد الاستشارة- فأمضه معتمدا على الله وحده, إن الله يحب المتوكلين عليه.
160 إن ينصركم الله فلا غالب لكم وإن يخذلكم فمن ذا الذي ينصركم من بعده وعلى الله فليتوكل المؤمنون
160 إن يمددكم الله بنصره ومعونته فلا أحد يستطيع أن يغلبكم, وإن يخذلكم فمن هذا الذي يستطيع أن ينصركم من بعد خذلانه لكم? وعلى الله وحده فليتوكل المؤمنون.
161 وما كان لنبي أن يغل ومن يغلل يأت بما غل يوم القيامة ثم توفى كل نفس ما كسبت وهم لا يظلمون
161 وما كان لنبي أن يخون أصحابه بأن يأخذ شيئا من الغنيمة غير ما اختصه الله به, ومن يفعل ذلك منكم يأت بما أخذه حاملا له يوم القيامة; ليفضح به في الموقف المشهود, ثم تعطى كل نفس جزاء ما كسبت وافيا غير منقوص دون ظلم.
162 أفمن اتبع رضوان الله كمن باء بسخط من الله ومأواه جهنم وبئس المصير
162 لا يستوي من كان قصده رضوان الله ومن هو مكب على المعاصي, مسخط لربه, فاستحق بذلك سكن جهنم, وبئس المصير.
163 هم درجات عند الله والله بصير بما يعملون
163 أصحاب الجنة المتبعون لما يرضي الله متفاوتون في الدرجات, وأصحاب النار المتبعون لما يسخط الله متفاوتون في الدركات, لا يستوون. والله بصير بأعمالهم لا يخفى عليه منها شيء.
164 لقد من الله على المؤمنين إذ بعث فيهم رسولا من أنفسهم يتلو عليهم آياته ويزكيهم ويعلمهم الكتاب والحكمة وإن كانوا من قبل لفي ضلال مبين
164 لقد أنعم الله على المؤمنين من العرب; إذ بعث فيهم رسولا من أنفسهم, يتلو عليهم آيات القرآن, ويطهرهم من الشرك والأخلاق الفاسدة, ويعلمهم القرآن والسنة, وإن كانوا من قبل هذا الرسول لفي غي وجهل ظاهر.
165 أولما أصابتكم مصيبة قد أصبتم مثليها قلتم أنى هذا قل هو من عند أنفسكم إن الله على كل شيء قدير
165 أولما أصابتكم -أيها المؤمنون- مصيبة, وهي ما أصيب منكم يوم "أحد" قد أصبتم مثليها من المشركين في يوم "بدر", قلتم متعجبين: كيف يكون هذا ونحن مسلمون ورسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فينا وهؤلاء مشركون ? قل لهم -أيها النبي-: هذا الذي أصابكم هو من عند أنفسكم بسبب مخالفتكم أمر رسولكم وإقبالكم على جمع الغنائم. إن الله يفعل ما يشاء ويحكم ما يريد, لا معقب لحكمه.
157 ولئن قتلتم في سبيل الله أو متم لمغفرة من الله ورحمة خير مما يجمعون
157 And if you are killed in the cause of Allah or die - then forgiveness from Allah and mercy are better than whatever they accumulate [in this world].
158 ولئن متم أو قتلتم لإلى الله تحشرون
158 And whether you die or are killed, unto Allah you will be gathered.
159 فبما رحمة من الله لنت لهم ولو كنت فظا غليظ القلب لانفضوا من حولك فاعف عنهم واستغفر لهم وشاورهم في الأمر فإذا عزمت فتوكل على الله إن الله يحب المتوكلين
159 So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him].
160 إن ينصركم الله فلا غالب لكم وإن يخذلكم فمن ذا الذي ينصركم من بعده وعلى الله فليتوكل المؤمنون
160 If Allah should aid you, no one can overcome you; but if He should forsake you, who is there that can aid you after Him? And upon Allah let the believers rely.
161 وما كان لنبي أن يغل ومن يغلل يأت بما غل يوم القيامة ثم توفى كل نفس ما كسبت وهم لا يظلمون
161 It is not [attributable] to any prophet that he would act unfaithfully [in regard to war booty]. And whoever betrays, [taking unlawfully], will come with what he took on the Day of Resurrection. Then will every soul be [fully] compensated for what it earned, and they will not be wronged.
162 أفمن اتبع رضوان الله كمن باء بسخط من الله ومأواه جهنم وبئس المصير
162 So is one who pursues the pleasure of Allah like one who brings upon himself the anger of Allah and whose refuge is Hell? And wretched is the destination.
163 هم درجات عند الله والله بصير بما يعملون
163 They are [varying] degrees in the sight of Allah, and Allah is Seeing of whatever they do.
164 لقد من الله على المؤمنين إذ بعث فيهم رسولا من أنفسهم يتلو عليهم آياته ويزكيهم ويعلمهم الكتاب والحكمة وإن كانوا من قبل لفي ضلال مبين
164 Certainly did Allah confer [great] favor upon the believers when He sent among them a Messenger from themselves, reciting to them His verses and purifying them and teaching them the Book and Wisdom, although they were before in manifest error.
165 أولما أصابتكم مصيبة قد أصبتم مثليها قلتم أنى هذا قل هو من عند أنفسكم إن الله على كل شيء قدير
165 Why [is it that] when a [single] disaster struck you [on the day of Uhud], although you have struck [the enemy in the battle of Badr] with one twice as great, you said, "From where is this ? Say, "It is from yourselves." Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.
157 ولئن قتلتم في سبيل الله أو متم لمغفرة من الله ورحمة خير مما يجمعون
157 True indeed! If you are slain in the way of Allah, or you die (in death), then forgiveness of Allah and His Mercy is better than that of (the hypocrites and the hypocrites) it summarizes (covering all kinds of pleasures of life).
158 ولئن متم أو قتلتم لإلى الله تحشرون
158 For truly! If you die or are killed, then to Allah you will be gathered.
159 فبما رحمة من الله لنت لهم ولو كنت فظا غليظ القلب لانفضوا من حولك فاعف عنهم واستغفر لهم وشاورهم في الأمر فإذا عزمت فتوكل على الله إن الله يحب المتوكلين
159 So because of Mercy from God, you were gentle towards them, and if you were rude and stubborn, they would have fled from you. So forgive them, and ask forgiveness for them, and meet them in affairs (war and worldly affairs). then when you have determined (after the meeting, to do something) then put your trust in Allah. Lo! God loveth those who put their trust.
160 إن ينصركم الله فلا غالب لكم وإن يخذلكم فمن ذا الذي ينصركم من بعده وعلى الله فليتوكل المؤمنون
160 If God helps you achieve victory then no one will be able to defeat you; and if He defeats you, who then will be able to help you after Allah? And to God let the believers put their trust.
161 وما كان لنبي أن يغل ومن يغلل يأت بما غل يوم القيامة ثم توفى كل نفس ما كسبت وهم لا يظلمون
161 And it is not for a Prophet to be betrayed, and whosoever is betrayed will bring him on the Day of Resurrection what he has betrayed; then every soul shall be perfected in that which it hath earned, and they shall not be cut off in the least.
162 أفمن اتبع رضوان الله كمن باء بسخط من الله ومأواه جهنم وبئس المصير
162 Is anyone who according to the pleasure of Allah is like the one who will eventually get wrath from Allah? While its return is hell, and it is an evil return.
163 هم درجات عند الله والله بصير بما يعملون
163 Such are the stages of Allah. and Allah is Seer of what they do.
164 لقد من الله على المؤمنين إذ بعث فيهم رسولا من أنفسهم يتلو عليهم آياته ويزكيهم ويعلمهم الكتاب والحكمة وإن كانوا من قبل لفي ضلال مبين
164 Verily, Allah has given to those who believe when He sent among them a messenger from their own nation, rehearsing to them the verses of Allah, and cleanse them (from misguidance), and teach them the Book of Allah (Al-Quran) and Wisdom (deep knowledge of the laws of the Shariah). And lo! They were before in manifest error.
165 أولما أصابتكم مصيبة قد أصبتم مثليها قلتم أنى هذا قل هو من عند أنفسكم إن الله على كل شيء قدير
165 (Do you disobey the Messenger?) And when you are struck (in the battle of Uhud), which you have won such as doubled (by accusing the enemy in the battle of Badr), you say: "Where did this ) come from? " Say (O Muhammad): "Accident" is from your own fault (against the command of the Prophet). " Allah has power over all things.

Narrated Sa'id ibn Zayd:
AbdurRahman ibn al-Akhnas said that when he was in the mosque, a man mentioned Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). So Sa'id ibn Zayd got up and said: I bear witness to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) that I heard him say: Ten persons will go to Paradise: The Prophet (ﷺ) will go to Paradise, AbuBakr will go to Paradise , Umar will go to Paradise, Uthman will go to Paradise, Ali will go to Paradise, Talhah will go to Paradise: az-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam will go to paradise, Sa'd ibn Malik will go to Paradise, and AbdurRahman ibn Awf will go to Paradise. If I wish, I can mention the tenth. The People asked: Who is he: So he kept silence. The again asked: Who is he: He replied: He is Sa'id ibn Zayd.
حدثنا حفص بن عمر النمري, حدثنا شعبة, عن الحر بن الصياح, عن عبد الرحمن بن الأخنس, أنه كان في المسجد فذكر رجل عليا عليه السلام فقام سعيد بن زيد فقال أشهد على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أني سمعته وهو يقول "عشرة في الجنة النبي في الجنة وأبو بكر في الجنة وعمر في الجنة وعثمان في الجنة وعلي في الجنة وطلحة في الجنة والزبير بن العوام في الجنة وسعد بن مالك في الجنة وعبد الرحمن بن عوف في الجنة ". ولو شئت لسميت العاشر. قال فقالوا من هو فسكت قال فقالوا من هو فقال هو سعيد بن زيد.
