Some of the protesters said Tabligh Jamaat members in India and Bangladesh have been opposing the visit of Maulana Saad as Darul Uloom Deoband, the movement’s central seminary, has been maintaining a state of non-cooperation with him. Maulana Saad, however, is also a religious leader known for making controversial statements which have caused uproar in India on several occasions. Tabligh Jamaat torn apart by internal dispute
Tabligh Jamaat, an Islamic non-political organization based in Bangladesh, is being ripped apart by a long standing internal dispute among its top leaders. The dispute over establishing dominance reached a new height after two factions of the organization engaged in a violent clash on the premises of Kakrail Mosque in Dhaka on Tuesday. According to sources from the Tabligh, scuffles between the two factions are becoming a regular occurrence. Seven people are leading the Bangladesh chapter of Tabligh Jamaat as Faisal (Ameer). Syed Wasif Islam is one of the ameers and also a Majlis-e-Shura member of the organization. A senior Tabligh leader named Professor Mushfiq Ahmed and his followers began a long-standing dispute with Syed Wasif after they accused him of misusing power. However, following Mushfiq’s death in 2015, his followers became isolated inside the organization. Sources said the Nizamuddin Markaz of Delhi is considered the international headquarters of Tabligh Jamaat, and that Maulana Saad Kandhalvi is one of the leading influential leaders there. Maulana Saad Kandhalvi, however, is also a religious leader known for making controversial statements which have caused uproar in India on several occasions. He received harsh criticism for speaking against taking money for religious teachings and claiming that prayers cannot be offered if the devotee carries a mobile phone with a camera. According to sources, among the faisals of Bangladesh Tabligh Jamaat, Maulana Muhammad Jubayer, Maulana Rabiul Haque and Maulana Omar Faruq have protested against the upcoming visit of Maulana Saad Kandhalvi to the country. Qawmi Alems of Hefazat-e-Islam have also demanded cancellation of Maulana Saad’s visit. Following the heated exchange between the top leaders, Madrasa students locked in a clash and carried out acts of vandalism which later lead to the violence in Tabligh Jamaat’s Kakrail Markaz on Tuesday. Later, police arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control. The Shura Council members of the Tabligh held a meeting on the same day and agreed upon some terms to help resolve the ongoing dispute. When approached, the son of Syed Wasif Islam, Maulana Osama Islam, admitted to the incident. He said future disputes will be resolved in a civil manner through council meetings. The leaders agreed that in future meetings, every decision must be approved by receiving two-thirds of the vote from the members. Disputes will also be resolved in council meetings. It was also decided in the meeting that no one will be allowed to carry weapons at any Tabligh programme. On the issue of inviting a guest from abroad, the leaders agreed that they will follow a decision made in a previous meeting attended by the home minister. The agreement was signed by Maulana Muhammad Jubayer, Syed Wasif Islam, Maulana Rabiul Haque, Khan Muhammad Shahabuddin Nasim, Maulana Omar Faruq, Mohammad Mosharraf and Mohammad Hossain. Two groups of Tabligh Jamaat have locked into a clash at Ijtema Maidan in Tongi on Saturday; December 1, 2018 Dhaka Tribune Two factions have fought at the Bishwa Ijtema ground over establishing dominance At least one person has been killed in a series of clashes between two factions of Tabligh Jamaat over establishing dominance at the Bishwa Ijtema grounds on the banks of the Turag River. More than 200 people were also injured in the clashes at the Ijtema grounds in Tongi on Saturday. The deceased was identified as Ismail Hossain, 70, of Munshiganj, said Tongi (west) police station Officer-in-Charge Emdadul Haque. Ismail was a follower of Maulana Saad Kandhalvi, top scholar of Indian Tabligh Jamaat, said Assistant Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Gazipur Metropolitan Police, Masudur Rahman. Tongi Ahsan Ullah Master Health Complex physician, Dr Monira Begum, said around 150 people received treatment at the hospital and more people are being admitted. “Of them, 25 people who were severely injured, have been transferred to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, Kurmitola Hospital, and other hospitals,” she said. The trouble mongers also vandalized a number of cars and motorcycles parked at the Ijtema grounds, he said. The clash broke out around 8am when supporters of Saad Kandhalvi tried to enter the Ijtema premises where the supporters of Maulana Jubayer had taken up position. At one stage, the supporters of Maulana Saad broke open the main gate of the Ijtema grounds and swarmed in. Sporadic clashes took place between the two groups, leaving Ismail dead on the spot and scores of people injured. The Tabligh men hurled brickbats at each other and attacked each other with sticks. Additional police with armoured vehicles and water cannons have been deployed to avoid any untoward situation. Local administration has taken control of the grounds following a Home Ministry decision later in the day. Meanwhile, Gazipur Metropolitan Traffic Police (South Zone) Senior Assistant Commissioner Thoai Aung Prue Marma told the Dhaka Tribune: “Thousands of Muslim devotees took up position on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway, resulting in a huge tailback.” Traffic ground to a halt on the highway for one-and-a-half hours in the afternoon, he said. Vehicular movement on the western side of busy Airport Road remained at a standstill from the Airport intersection to Abdullahpur since morning, as Saad Kandhalvi’s supporters attacked followers of the other faction at the Airport intersection. For the last couple of days, Maulana Jubayer supporters had been taking up positions on the Ijtema Maidan in Tongi. The followers of Maulana Saad started gathering in front of the maidan from 6am Saturday and took position in front of the main gate. A follower of Maulana Saad said: “We had announced a ‘Jor Ijtema’ (a gathering of devotees before the Bishwa Ijtema) between November 30 and December 4, as a tradition that is followed annually. “However, as thousands of devotees tried to enter the Ijtema grounds, they were denied entry by supporters of Maulana Jubayer. Madrasa students following Maulana Jubayer had already positioned themselves inside the venue with sticks.” The devotee added that the clashes have resulted in a tense situation in the area. Members belonging to one of the two Tabligh Jamaat factions wielding sticks during the clash on December 1, 2018 Dhaka Tribune Maulana Shariful Islam, a supporter of Maulana Juyaber, said: “Both factions had entered a stalemate centring the Jor Ijtema, which was to be held at the Ijtema grounds. “The Home Ministry had requested both parties to halt the Jor Ijtema until further notice, which we all agreed on. However, thousands of supporters of Maulana Saad attempted to enter the Ijtema grounds on Saturday morning, causing unrest in the area.” What is this fight all about? In January, hundreds of members of the Bangladesh chapter of Islamic movement Tabligh Jamaat and some Qawmi madrasa Alems (clerics) staged a demonstration near Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, protesting the arrival of Indian preacher Maulana Muhammad Saad Al Kandhalvi. In the face of stern opposition from a faction of Tabligh Jamaat, Saad Kandhalvi had to return to New Delhi last year without being able to join that years’ Biswa Ijtema, the second largest religious congregation of Muslims after Hajj. The radical Islamic organization Hefazat-e-Islam initially tried to prevent Saad’s arrival because they were strongly opposed to his participation in the Ijtema and oppose his statements made during the last Bishwa Ijtema. Their opposition stemmed from allegations of what Hefazat leaders claimed to be “controversial statements about the Quran and Sunnah” that Saad had made. Saad is the great-grandson of the founder of the Tabligh movement and head of its Indian chapter, though his leadership is disputed by the organization’s Pakistani and Bangladeshi followers. Tabligh Bangladesh chapter split into two groups following disputes among its top leaders over establishing dominance and the visit of Maulana Saad Kandhalvi. The conflict had also led to violent clashes between the factions on the premises of Kakrail Mosque in Dhaka in November last year. Following that, the government had issued five directives to resolve the internal disputes of Tabligh Jamaat and carry out their activities in an organized manner, on September 18. Tabligh Jamaat supporters leaving the Ijtema grounds area after the clash in Tongi Batar Gate area on December 1, 2018, afternoon |Focus BanglaThe circular said that Tabligh Jamaat activities around the world were known as a non-violent, peaceful and completely religious. However, the directives have been issued as recently a visible split in the organization has spread conflict in two factions across the country, which goes against religious customs and overall peaceful environment. Currently, the followers of Maulana Saad Kandhalvi in the country are not allowed into Tabligh Jamaat Bangladesh chapter’s markaz (headquarters), the Kakrail Mosque in Dhaka. The government later decided to postpone Bishwa Ijtema due to the ongoing dispute between the factions and the upcoming 11th parliamentary election, which is slated for December 30.. Held every winter in Bangladesh, the next Ijtema was supposed to be organized in the second or third week of January. The decision to postpone the congregation was taken at a meeting between Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and leaders of the two factions of Tabligh Jamaat at the secretariat on November 13. Earlier, both Tabligh factions had announced the organizing of the Ijtema on separate days in January which led to a dispute between them. _______________________ Maulana Saad Kandhlawi Maulana Muhammad Zubair Ul Hasan Darul Uloom Deoband's Stand About Maulana Saad Kandhlawi Of Tabligh12/18/2016
Important Clarification _______________________ Tablighi Jamaat in Britain splits sharply in two factionsLONDON: The Islamic missionary and reformist movement called Tablighi Jamaat has split into two groups in Britain with one faction following Raiwind Markaz while the other is following Moulana Saad of Nizam-ud-Din in India. These differences started in 2015 when the advisory committee – or shoora - was formed to deal with all important matters including international congregations (also known as aalmi Ijtama). The followers of Nizam Ud Din in India refused to accept the decisions of shoora and decided to obey only the decision of Moulana Saad of Nizam ud Din. These differences led to split not only for the followers of Tablighi jamaat but also caused split in Tablighi centres in Britain for the first time. The Tablighi jamaat started its mission in Britain around 50 years ago and its membership grew steadily. Now, the followers of Raiwind Markaz or Masjid Ilyas, in east London, have established a new Tablighi centre in Blackburn confronting the famously sprawling Tablighi centre of Dewsbury. The followers of Moulana Saad of Nizam-ud-Din have established their own Tablighi centres including in East London, besides their stronghold of Dewsbury Tablighi centre. The differences grew so much that several incidents of brawl occurred and members and elders assaulted each other in London Markaz – also known as Masjid Ilyas and Abbey Mills Mosque. Tablighi Jaamt and police sources have confirmed that the police were called about 13 times and four people were arrested on different occasions. A source said that a group of Tablighi followers from Bangaldesh and Indian Gujarat ganged up against the Tablighi members from Pakistani background and other countries and as a result the Abbey Mills Mosque became a battleground. While the case of dispute of land possession of Ilyas Masjid was brought before the court by the warring groups, the London High Court earlier this year issued a devastating verdict against the Tablighi centre for being in violation of the laws. The London High Court has ordered that the local Newham Council was right to deny planning permission to London Markaz and ordered that it should be demolished because the masjid was built on the land allocated for some other purpose. While the Markaz is still operating and may continue to do so for a few months, there are heavy restrictions in place and division and tensions is visible. The two factions now don’t go to each other’s mosques and security personals are deputed at the gate of Ilyas Masjid to identify the members who come to the mosque to attend sermons. The management of Masjid Ilyas has restricted entry of a few individuals. Moulana Soulat Skinder, the leader of Abbey Mills Mosque, confirmed that the Tablighi Jamaat is no more one piece. “There are some differences between the factions of Tablighi Jamaat which can be resolved. We are making efforts to resolve these issues. We feel sorry that there are divisions, this means Ummah divided.” Haji Bostan, the follower of Moulana Saad of Nizam-ud-Din and leader of Dewsbury Tablighi Centre told The News/Geo that these matters of difference are of personal nature. “These differences have nothing to do with Shariah,” he said. Moulana Bostan said no organisation can be run without a figurehead. He said that the Raiwind Markaz “has been kept in dark and illusion”. He added: “The Blackburn Mosque and Masjid Ilyas have their personnel agendas. They are not serving Tablighi Jamaat. The new Tablighi jamaat doesn’t match with the original Tablighi Jamaat founded by Moulana Ilyas.” He said that some people have not told true story of the disputes to Moulana Abdul Wahab. He suggested that the differences can be resolved if Moulana Abdul Wahab and Moulana Saad could sit across each other to end the differences. Haji Abdul Wahab didn’t think that some spy agency could have caused the right between the two but he didn’t rule out “an international conspiracy”. It is pertinent to mention that Aalmi Tablighi Jamaat was formed by Moulana Ilyas in 1926 in Indian town of Saharanpur. The purpose of formation of Tablighi Jamaat was to bring reforms within the Muslims. Now after 92 year of its life of Jamaat and its activities, the number of followers of Tablighi Jamaat stands at around 80 million in mainly India, Pakistan and Bangladesh and it has presence in at least 150 countries. Currently, there are three strong centres of Tablighi Jamaat in the world: Raiwind Markaz of Pakistan, Nizam ud Din of India and Kakrail of Bangla Dash. In Britain, Tablighi Jamaat has one of the strongest presence outside of these countries. Tablighi Jamaat was so well-organsied at one stage that it stunned media in Britain when it told local council and courts around 12 years ago that it would built a mega mosque at the current place of disputed Masjid Ilyas land – and assured that it had funds of hundreds of millions of Pounds for a purpose built Tablighi mosque that could host thousands of people at one time, thereby becoming the largest mosque anywhere in the West. The plan to build the mega mosque now stands ruined not only because of the London High Court order but also because of the fact that the Tablighi elders are involved in a bitter do-or-die fight. _______________________ Global leadership split in Tablighi Jamaat echoes in San Francisco Bay Areain World — by Abdus Sattar Ghazali — October 12, 2018 The Tablighi Jamaat, a non-political group which concentrates on individual piety, has split in recent years into three major groups over leadership issue. Since its inception in 1929, the Tablighi Jamaat (TJ) had its global headquarters in Basti Nizamuddin in New Delhi, India. However in recent years Maulana Saad Khandalvi, grandson of the TJ founder Maulana Muhammad Ilyas Kandhalawi has claimed sole leadership of the TJ. This has caused severe split in the TJ as the TJs in Pakistan and Bangladesh have refused to accept the leadership claim of Maulana Saad Khandalvi. Hence the TJ has split into three main factions:
Like many countries, the USA also has very active Tablighi Jamaat. However, it is not known where is the markaz or headquarter of the TJ America. Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Atlanta, New York, and Washington, D.C., are the major centers of the Jamaat’s activities in the United States. According to a Voice Of America report of January 2016, U.S. officials estimate that the Tablighi Jamaat has some 50,000 followers in mosques in the United States. The Tablighi Jamaat is also very active in the San Francisco Bay Area with its markaz or center in Richmond mosque. However, the TJ in Richmond mosque is now allied with Nizamuddin (Delhi) leadership and recently expelled the TJ group allied with Raiwind, Pakistan. Incidentally, the Raiwind leadership had no place to go, hence they occupied the Islamic Society of East Bay mosque which is already facing a serious dispute between the members who want to run the mosque in secrecy (which they were doing for the last 20 years or so) and the ISEB founding and senior members who want to run the mosque transparently and complete the third phase of the mosque. On Tuesday, October 9, a Tablighi Jamaat, led by Mufti Shokat Ali from India visited the Islamic Center of Fremont, CA, known as Irvington Mosque. I met with the leader or Amir of the Indian TJ and other members of the group to explain the dispute over leadership at Richmond mosque. They were apparently not aware of the leadership dispute here. Their reaction was that they only convey a message of fraternity and peace. Tellingly, Mufti Shokat Ali addressing the people after the Isha (night) prayer pointed out that mosques are the cleanest places on earth but unfortunately they are also centers of in-fighting. Perhaps Mufti Shokat Ali was alluding to the leadership in-fighting of Tablighi Jamaat. It may be recalled that on June 19, 2016, followers of the two senior leaders of Tablighi Jamaat, Maulana Saad Kandhalwi and Maulana Zuhair ul Hassan, clashed physically over the issue of assuming top most leadership at the world headquarters of Tablighi Jamaat at Bangle Wali Masjid located in Basti Hazrat Nizamuddin in Delhi. This clash happened during the holy month of Ramadan. According to TwoCircles.net report, after Iftar and maghrib prayer the groups belonging to Maulana Saad Kandhalwi and Maulana Zuhair ul Hassan were discussing the issue of Amarat (leadership) which turned into brawl leading to violent clashes inside the mosque. The situation became so aggressive that police was called from eight police stations to control it. As many as 11 injured were taken to hospital for treatment. The situation became so sensitive that the police had to keep a close eye on the gathering whole night. The issue of leadership of the world-wide Tablighi movement is not new. Since the passing away of Maulana Inaam ul Hassan popularly known as Hazrat ji, a shura was appointed instead of one Amir. Shura consisted of Amir of Tablighi Jamaat Pakistan Haji Abdul Wahhab, Maulana Zubair ul Hasan who is the son of Inamul Hasan, and Maulana Saad Kandhalwi son of Maulana Yusuf Kandhalwi, the second Amir of the group. Since the passing away of Maulana Zubair ul Hasan in 2014 Maulana Saad has become the Amir. Son of Maulana Zubair ul Hasan, Maulana Zuhairul Hasan, has also laid a claim to the leadership, his followers have asked Maulana Saad to reconstitue the Shura which was rejected by Saad. The split in the central leadership has devastating effect on the TJ across the globe. For example: Tablighi Jamaat in Britain splits
Tablighi Jamaat has split into two groups in Britain with one faction following Raiwind Markaz while the other is following Maulana Saad of Nizam-ud-Din in India. The Tablighi jamaat started its mission in Britain around 50 years ago and its membership grew steadily. Now, the followers of Raiwind Markaz in east London also (called Masjid Ilyas), have established a new Tablighi centre in Blackburn while the followers of Moulana Saad of Nizam-ud-Din have established their own Tablighi centers in East London, besides their stronghold of Dewsbury Tablighi centre. The differences grew so much that several incidents of brawl occurred and members and elders assaulted each other in London Markaz and Abbey Mills Mosque. The News quoted Tablighi sources as saying that that the police were called about 13 times and four people were arrested on different occasions. In Britain, Tablighi Jamaat has one of the strongest presence outside Bangladesh, India and Pakistan. Tablighi Jamaat was so well-organized at one stage that it stunned media in Britain when it told local council and courts around 12 years ago that it would built a mega mosque at the current place of disputed Masjid Ilyas land – and assured that it had funds of hundreds of millions of Pounds for a purpose built Tablighi mosque that could host thousands of people at one time, thereby becoming the largest mosque anywhere in the West. The two factions now don’t go to each other’s mosques and security personals are deputed at the gate of Ilyas Masjid to identify the members who come to the mosque to attend sermons. The management of Masjid Ilyas has restricted entry of a few individuals. The plan to build the mega mosque now stands ruined not only because of the London High Court order but also because of the fact that the Tablighi elders are involved in a bitter do-or-die fight. Not surprisingly, in November 2017, there was a violent clash between the two groups over the TJ leadership dispute in Kakrail Mosque in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Kakrail Mosque is the Markaz of Tablighi Jamaat of Bangladesh which hosts the largest Tablibghi Ijtima in January every year. There were massive demonstrations in Dhaka when Maulana Saad Kandhalwi arrived to attend this January’s Ijtima. Maulana was not allowed to attend the Ijtima. He was sent back to Delhi by the Bangladesh government because of law and order situation. Around two million people attend the Bangladesh Ijtima which is perhaps the second largest gathering of Muslims after Hajj. The Tablighi Jamaat is estimated to be active in at least 165 nations throughout the world with millions of members.
