About 30 Muslim families worship at the Islamic Society of Joplin, Missouri.
Six years ago, the city of Joplin, Missouri, was hit by a tornado almost a mile wide. It killed 158 people, flipping over cars and leaving piles of splintered beams where houses once stood.
But along with the destruction came something else: a sense of solidarity among Joplin’s followers of different religions. “It happened to all of us. It didn’t happen just to the Christians,” said the Rev. Frank Sierra, an Episcopal priest who helped organize an interfaith service soon after the tornado.
When disaster struck the city of about 50,000 for a second time, five years ago, the interfaith community was ready to respond.
The trouble started in summer 2012. About 30 Muslim families live in Joplin, and many of them were fasting during the month-long Islamic holiday of Ramadan. One evening, Imam Lahmuddin, who ran the Islamic Society of Joplin out of a converted church, invited the local Episcopal congregation to visit.
“They stayed late that night,” Lahmuddin recalled. The Christians and Muslims were glad to meet one another. They broke the fast together. “We had conversation, we had food, and good companionship.”
Sierra was one of the visitors. “I was hoping to make a connection,” he said. He was impressed by the daily discipline of the Ramadan fast. “I thought, ‘these people are really into their faith.’”
The sense of unity in Joplin made it all the more shocking when, early the next morning, Lahmuddin’s phone rang. Something was happening at his mosque. He got in the car and started driving. “When I approached the building, I saw from far away smog in the sky,” Lahmuddin said.
The mosque was on fire. All that was left were some beams and a pile of smoldering wood where the mosque once stood.
Lahmuddin knew right away that the fire wasn’t accidental. Two months earlier, a man had been caught on camera trying to burn down the building.
The imam felt sadness, but he also thought, immediately, that he should trust God to keep him safe. “So I just tried to calm down,” he said. “Cannot do anything.”
As firefighters swarmed the site that morning, local Muslims started to arrive for the morning prayer. While they tried to deal with the shock, they knelt down on the grass and prayed.
Then, members of the Joplin Interfaith Coalition started coming by. “I drove there and saw the destruction that had been created,” said Paul Teverow, a local professor who belongs to the United Hebrew Congregation in Joplin. “I was just horrified to think that something like this could happen here,” he added. “I wanted to make it clear, and I wasn't alone here, that these people are part of our community. That an offense against them is an offense against all of us.”
That week, the Joplin Interfaith Coalition organized another breaking of the Ramadan fast — this time, at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church. A member of the coalition drove hours to Springfield, Missouri, to pick up specially prepared chickens. Lahmuddin led evening prayers inside the church.
Father Sierra said that, unfortunately, he wasn’t shocked by the fire. He sometimes hears comments in his own parish that seem Islamophobic. “I’ve heard it from side remarks: ‘Oh, they’re all terrorists,’” he said. “It’s sad. Where am I missing out in teaching? What part of the Bible am I not emphasizing? Because that’s not what Jesus teaches.”
The culprit behind the mosque burning, Jedediah Stout, was caught a year later. He pleaded guilty not only to the mosque fire, but also to an attempted arson at Planned Parenthood in Joplin. He told federal investigators that he didn’t like Islam and he didn’t believe in abortion.
In the months following the fire, donations poured in from across the country. The Muslim community raised enough money to build a new mosque. It opened in 2014.
Today, Joplin’s mosque is housed in a plain building surrounded by a black gate and a fluttering American flag. One afternoon last month, kids were running around there, getting ready for an Arabic lesson. On the wall, posters explained the similarities between Islam, Christianity and Judaism.
Lahmuddin said on the day the new mosque opened, he felt deep gratitude. “Many of our Christian friends said that when God takes something from you, he will give you a better one. They believe in that. And we do, too. Now we have a mosque that’s better than the one that was burnt.”
The new mosque’s prayer space is a square room with wall-to-wall carpets. It’s big enough for at least 100 people — which might seem like more than Joplin needs. But this way, Lahmuddin said, there’s plenty of room for the community to grow.
The new mosque in Joplin, built two years after the 2012 arson attack, is large enough for a growing Muslim community.

Abdul-Munim Sombat Jitmoud lives in Thailand. He served for years as the principal of several Islamic schools across the United States, including Lexington Universal Academy and Al-Salam Day School in St. Louis; he retired from the Missouri school a few months ago, he said.

Why I saved man who helped kill my son’
Uqbah Soperi Abdul Munim Sombat Jitmoud declaring that he forgives Relford at court.
PETALING JAYA: A father demonstrated the true meaning of forgiveness in a Kentucky courtroom in the US recently when he embraced and forgave the man who abetted in the murder of his son.
Salahuddin Jitmoud, who was robbed and stabbed to death while making his last pizza delivery of the night on 19 April 2015.
Trey Alexander Relford, 24, was about to receive the death sentence after pleading guilty for his involvement in the murder of 22-year-old Salahuddin Jitmoud, who was robbed and stabbed to death while making a pizza delivery on the night of April 19, 2015, in Lexington, Kentucky.
However, Salahuddin’s 66-year-old father, Abdul-Munim Sombat Jitmoud, stunned the courtroom and left the judge teary eyed when he said from the witness stand that he forgave Relford.
“Forgiveness is the greatest gift of charity in Islam,” the Washington Post quoted Jitmoud as saying.
Jitmoud later embraced Relford, who sobbed as he apologised for Salahuddin’s death. Tears flowed freely as their families joined in a group hug.
A video of that touching moment has since gone viral on social media and made headlines around the world.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJ0l4VFTFlY
Speaking to FMT, Jitmoud, originally from Thailand, said although he had never met Relford or the latter’s parents, he decided to forgive Relford and agree for him to be sentenced to 31 years in prison instead of the death penalty.
“We could not stand the thought of having to bear witness to Relford’s death in an electric chair,” he said.
Jitmoud, a retired school principal, was in charge of seven Islamic schools in the United States for 31 years.
He said he was told not to make eye contact with Relford during the trial but his long experience as a school principal made it difficult for him to obey that instruction.
“I broke all the protocols in court,” he said.
People in the courtroom were touched not only by his decision to forgive Relford but also by his gesture of offering him paper napkins to wipe his tears and embracing him.
“When I saw him cry, it was natural for me to hand him the tissues because he was wiping his tears with the collar of his prison uniform,” he said.
When he embraced and comforted Relford, he said, he could sense that the man was overcome by guilt. So he whispered a few words of comfort.
“I also told him to seek good friends when he gets out of jail.”
The Jitmoud family all together.
Jitmoud said that it was his belief in God’s attribute of mercy, as often repeated in the Quran, that moved him to give Relford a second chance.
“The Quran says whoever saves one life saves humanity,” he said, referring to the 32nd verse of the fifth chapter of the Quran.
He said a verse that comforted him and helped him make his decision was the 51st verse of the ninth chapter: “‘Never will we be struck except by what Allah has decreed for us; He is our protector. And upon Allah let the believers rely.”
Another verse that inspired him was the 53rd verse of the 39th chapter: “O My servants who have transgressed against themselves (by sinning), do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins.”
Jitmoud’s wife, Jamilah Kolocotronis, died of leukaemia in 2013. She wrote a series of novels about the challenges faced by Muslims living in America, especially converts.
Salahuddin and his parents.
Salahuddin was working as a pizza delivery driver to earn money to pay for the classes he took with Stage Right Acting (SRA), a performance arts school. He was also working on a film inspired by his mother’s books.
SRA has made a tribute video, describing Salahuddin as a kind, passionate and “wildly creative” individual.
Linda "Jamilah" Kolocotronis is an American Muslim writer and former educator in American Islamic schools. Of Greek origin, she converted to Islam at the age of 23, and she has published several Islamic fiction novels as well as her doctoral dissertation.Kolocotronis changed her first name to Jamilah when she became Muslim in 1980.
After reading the Quran "looking for mistakes and inconsistencies" she found none and converted to Islam in July 1980 (Ramadan 19, 1400), and changed her name to Jamilah.
Kolocotronis’ first book published in 1990, Islamic Jihad: An Historical Perspective is her only non-fiction title. She is also featured in a book about female American converts to Islam, Daughters of Another Path. Kolocotronis' first Islamic fiction novel, Innocent People, was written after the September 11 attacks as a reaction to the proliferation of misinformation about Muslims in America.[4] The themes of the book include anti-Muslim actions and sentiments targeted at the characters, as well as the emotional turmoil felt by individual Muslims who were being associated with the acts of the terrorist. Her subsequent novels explore other challenges routinely faced by Muslims in America, especially converts to Islam. Kolocotronis’ Echoes Series is the second series of Islamic fiction novels to be written in English.

AbdurRahman ibn al-Akhnas said that when he was in the mosque, a man mentioned Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). So Sa'id ibn Zayd got up and said: I bear witness to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) that I heard him say: Ten persons will go to Paradise: The Prophet (ﷺ) will go to Paradise, AbuBakr will go to Paradise , Umar will go to Paradise, Uthman will go to Paradise, Ali will go to Paradise, Talhah will go to Paradise: az-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam will go to paradise, Sa'd ibn Malik will go to Paradise, and AbdurRahman ibn Awf will go to Paradise. If I wish, I can mention the tenth. The People asked: Who is he: So he kept silence. The again asked: Who is he: He replied: He is Sa'id ibn Zayd.
